Where: Brooks Edge Farm, 2909 Chase Road Rock Stream, NY 14878

This workshop series will feature in-depth presentation and discussion led by Dr. Padraig French who is the Head of Livestock Systems and the Dairy Enterprise Leader at Teagasc (part of the Irish Department of Agriculture). Dr. French will focus on the critical success factors for Irish dairy, which include pasture utilization, labor efficiency, and managing for seasonal calving. The discussion will focus on ways that U.S. dairy farmers can use some of the Irish dairy techniques to become more profitable with grass farming.

Additionally, Brooks Edge Farm is creating a plan to go from 75 cows fed in a tie-stall barn to grazing 150 cows with a retrofit swing parlor and loose housing. Come learn about their low-overhead expansion plan and share your ideas for improving efficiency on their farm.

Dr. Padraig French, Head of Livestock Systems at Teagasc and dairy farmer, has led research on dairy systems, grassland management, calf-to-beef production, and animal nutrition. He has worked in the UK, New Zealand, and Tanzania, and is a past President of the Irish Grassland Association.

This project is funded in part by The Northeast Dairy Innovation Center.

This Project has been organized collaboratively by Conservation Performance, LLC., The Wallace Center, The New England Grazing Network, Champlain Valley Farmers Coalition, Wolfes Neck Center, Maine Organic Milk Producers, Dairy Grazing Alliance, and The Vermont Grass Farmers Association.
